Polymer insulators, also known as composite insulators or silicone rubber insulators, are widely used in modern transmission and distribution line systems as well as substation applications. They are composed of a high-strength epoxy fiberglass core rod, a hydrophobic silicone rubber housing with sheds, and customizable metal end fittings.
Compared to traditional porcelain or glass insulators, polymer insulators are significantly lighter in weight while offering excellent resistance to pollution, corrosion, and mechanical stress.
Depending on the specific application within the power grid, polymer insulators can be classified into the following main types: Polymer suspension insulators, polymer pin insulators, polymer line post insulators, and polymer station post insulators.
